MAXIMILIAN (1832-1867). Brother of Francis Joseph of Austria. Emperor of Mexico.
Document Signed ('Maximiliano'), 1 page double folio, given at the Palace of Mexco, 30 January 1865. The text printed under a typographical heading, completed by hand. Appointing Alfred Lloyd Fox as Mexican vice-consul in Falmouth, Cornwall.
Maximilian had been invited to become Emperor of Mexico in 1863 and had accepted the following year. He was initially supported by the French and had driven Juárez over the northern border. After Napoleon III had ordered the withdrawal of his troops, however, Juárez had returned, beseiged Maximiliam at Querétaro and forced him to surrender. He was condemned by court-martial and shot on 19 June 1867.
