MEREDITH, George (1828-1909). Novelist & poet.
Autograph Letter Signed to A G Ross, 1 page 8vo, Box Hill, Dorking, 15 February 1888. Sending his subscription for the Rabelais Club and simultaneously resigning his membership.
According to Cline (The Letters of George Meredith, Vol 2, page 696n) 'The Rabelais Club had come into existence in 1879 or 1880 and lasted until 1889 [perhaps Meredith's withdrawal was the last straw?]. The members included Lord Houghton, Sir Frederick Pollock, Walter Besant, J. Comyns Carr, Thomas Hardy, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Victor Hugo, Henry Irving, Henry James, R.L. Stevenson, etc.' The present letter appears to be unpublished.
