LANG, Andrew (1844-1912). Scholar and poet.
Two Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Steel, 3 pages 8vo (a little soiled), 1 Marloes Road, 24 and 31 May, no year. Evidently concerning arrangements for a debate at the Oxford Union, and a dinner date.
'Will this do:?
"That Popular Education, (as at present conducted,) saps the manhood of the Race, and is especially pernicious to Literature."
I am certain of the
facts.'
On the reverse in pencil are the names of the mover, opposer and third and fourth speakers on this or another motion; the third being Lang himself, and the fourth 'Mr H Belloc. Balliol C[ollege] President.'
The second letter attempts to discover the date of their dinner:
'The heat, and Scotch history, are softening my brain. On what day was I to dine with you? ...'
