DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge (1832-1898). 'Lewis Carroll'.
Autograph Letter Signed ('C.L. Dodgson') to Mrs Baly, mother of his child-friend Gladys, 1 page 8vo, 7 Lushington Road, Eastbourne, 7 August 1893. Commending the practice of copying 'draped' as well as 'undraped' figures, and offering to procure a book for Gladys's instruction.
'Does Gladys possess "Little Thumb". If not, let me give it her. The pictures (of children) are lovely, & would be good for her to copy. They differ from "Fairies" in being all draped. So she will now have both varieties to draw from. / Love to her. Sincerely yours'
Not in The Letters of Lewis Carroll ed. Morton N. Cohen, and apparently unpublished. Dodgson had met Mrs Baly and her daughter when they found themselves fellow-lodgers in Eastbourne in October 1891.
