NOTTINGHAM, Charles Howard, 1st Earl of (1536-1624). Lord admiral of England and favourite of Elizabeth I. Document Signed ('Notingham'), 1 page 4to (oblong), 1615. A certificate of the the charges sustained at the naval dockyards of Chatham, Deptford, Woolwich and Portsmouth in January 1615, totalling £991 4s 8d. Howard, then the second Baron Howard of Effingham, was granted the earldom of Nottingham in consequence of his successful command in the Cadiz expedition of 1596. He had also been successful earlier against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Elizabeth I on her deathbed confirmed to Nottingham her choice as successor of James VI of Scotland, who thus became James I of England, and with whom Nottingham continued to receive favour.
