NEWTON, Alfred (1829-1907). Zoologist & ornithologist.
Autograph Letter Signed to Professor [Richard] Owen, 2½ pages 8vo, Magdalene College [Cambridge], 8 March 1868, a note of identification at the head. Sending a draft of a letter to the Pall Mall to whom he has reluctantly written, and enthusiastically accepting Owen's invitation to inspect the dodo's bones in the Museum.
'... I have always had the utmost abhorrence of the unprincipled manner in which that paper is conducted, and nothing but your request would I think have induced me to write to it. It is one's duty sometimes to touch pitch. ...'
