Autograph Letter Signed to P[eter] G[uthrie] Tait (1831-1901, mathematician and physicist), 2 pages 8vo, 33 George Square, 23 May 1886. Thanking Tait for supplying a suitable quotation for his painting, which he will adopt as the second motto ('The first place must of course be awarded to St Paul!').
'... I wish you could in your limitless ingenuity invent me a Title for the picture, for I suppose "The Choice" would scarcely do.'
