MORE, Hannah (1745-1833). Religious writer.
Autograph Receipt Signed, 64 x 154 mm. (2½ x 6 inches) laid down (small wax seal on the reverse), 7 February ['1781' in another hand]. A receipt for twenty pounds from the publisher Thomas Cadell, ' being in full for the Produce of Fatal Falsehood first edition.'
Hannah More's third and last play The Fatal Falsehood was printed in two editions by Cadell, the seond in 1780. It would appear that if the date on the present document is correct he was fairly slow to release payment. However, the play was not a success and ran for only a few nights. It is said that Cadell advised Hannah More that she was 'too good a Christian for an author' [cited in Oxford DNB, from W. Roberts [Memoirs ... of Hannah More, third edition, vol. 1, page 172].
Provenance: from a collection formed by A.M. Broadley in 1903.
[No: 24671]
