SPOONER, William Archibald (1844-1930). Warden of New College; originator of the 'Spoonerism.'.
Two Autograph Letters Signed to [Luigino] Franchetti, in all 3½ pages 8vo, New College, Oxford (one from the Warden's lodgings), 26 April and 26 June 1913. Sending a stern warning that Franchetti is to 'make a solomn promise' not to lead his visiting brother astray. The second letter backtracks, congratulating Franchetti on his first and wishing him a successful musical career.
'... If you will send me back my letter to your father I will rewrite it & leave out the parts to which you object, but I want him, as I want you, quite clearly to understand that I consider you responsible for the good behaviour of your brother in every respect while he is your guest in Oxford. ...'
Franchetti did indeed have a successful career, as a distinguished pianist.
