Rodney pinned down in Spithead

RODNEY, George Bridges, 1st Baron (1719-1792). Admiral.
Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 2 pages 4to, Sandwich, Spithead, 12 December [1779] 'at Noon'. Discussing his plans for setting sail and declining to offer accommodation to his correspondent due to lack of room, but promising to recommend that one of his captains show hospitality.
Rodney was waiting with his large fleet of nearly one hundred and fifty to sail south to provide reinforcements to relieve Gibraltar. A report of Spanish warships concentrating in the Straits added to the urgency of the operation, while westerlies pinned Rodney's fleet down in Spithead. It was not until 24 December that the longed-for easterly allowed the fleet to set sail.
'... I shall certainly sail, the moment Wind and weather permit. You must govern yourself by the Wind. If Westerly you may remain a few days in Town but if it comes Easterly I shall sail as soon as such a large fleet can weigh Anchor. ...'
