ROCHESTER, Laurence Hyde, Earl of (1641-1711). Politician. Fragment of a Treasury document, signed ('Rochester'), ca 150 x 145 mm (5½ x 6 inches), Treasury Chambers, 17 April 1683. Signed also by the other Treasury Ministers, Sir Edward Dering (1625-1684), Sidney Godolphin (1645-1712, 1st Earl), J Ernle and Sir Stephen Fox. Rochester and Godolphin, together with Sunderland, were thought to be the deepest in the King's confidence and together were known as 'The Chits'. [No: 19977]
