BRITTEN, Benjamin (1913-1976). Composer
Programme for the performance of the War Requiem by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic on 15 April 1967, 20 pages 8vo (rust marks from the staples). Signed on the title page by Britten, Peter Pears, Heather Harper and John Shirley Quirk.
The War Requiem, written for the reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral, was first performed there on 30 May 1962. Britten had intended the soloists to represent different nations and had chosen Peter Pears, Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, and Galina Vishnevskaya. The last, however, had to be replaced by Heather Harper when the Russian authorities refused to allow her to take part.
