SCOTT, Winfield (1786-1866). American army officer and presidential candidate. Autograph Letter Signed to G J Orth, 2 pages 8vo (the blank leaf neatly inlaid), Washington, 20 July 1852. Evidently relating to his unsuccessful presidential campaign, and declining to attend a public meeting. '... I have already written to some Indiana Correspondent - I think my friend S[chuyler] Colfax - that I must not be expected at any public meeting; that if I were to attend one, I should be obliged to attend a great many, & that, condering my position, I ought to be as retiring as possible. These considerations, & a temporary indisposition, have caused me to decline being at the Niagara Falls on the 27th instant. ...'Perhaps it is not surprising that Scott was defeated in his presidential ambitions by Franklin Pierce.
