The American premiŠre of the First Symphony

ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Composer.
Lengthy Autograph Letter Signed to [Alfred] Littleton of the publishers, Novello, 4 pages 4to, Plas Gwyn, Hereford, 30 August 1908. Concerning negotiations for the first American performance of the first symphony, and praising Littleton's diplomacy.
'... I would not mention the sum again for this reason; the "sort-of-talked-over" offer was probably in conversation with Sanford who is their president &, I believe, backer. I remember it all but, as I told Calyton & you, the whole thing was conversational & "in the air"...'
'For the same reason as above I suggest
N. York ... Chicago has not done much since Theodore Thomas died; Cincinatti of course had the festival only. You see they are all friends & will treat things differently from the agents' way. I hope you do not think all these quibbles too worrying: the nuances om dealing with or amongst friends is what I meant when I said in my former letter that negociation (sic) becomes impossible ...'
Elgar had suggested allowing New York to make an offer the première so that both Walter Damrosch and his brother Frank could be directly involved.
