SHAW, George Bernard (1856-1950). Playwright. Characteristically curmudgeonly Typewritten Letter Signed to the editor of The Village, 1 page 4to (slightly foxed, bearing received stamp), Ayot st Lawrence, 17 Jan 1950. Heavily corrected in Shaw's hand, the letter blames the wireless for destoying the traditional village. '... It is a lovely village; and life seemed idlyllic until you had been here long enough to get behind the scenes, and learn the crimimal histories of its apparently blameless families. All this has been wiped out by the wireless. We now speak like the B.B.C. announcers; we hear classical music played by orchestras a hundred strong under the most famous European conductors; and scientific lectures are more frequent than sermons. Our rich plutocratic squires are taxed out of existence; but the cars of well-to-do city trippers block our one street at our one inn every Sunday in summer. ...' [No: 20541]
