SCOTT, Sir Walter (1771-1832). Novelist & poet.
Autograph Letter Signed to The Revd [James] Arkle in Hawick, 1 page 4to with address-leaf (a little worn), Abbotsford, 4 May 1814. Concerning a petition received by Scott from a Jane Scott, which he has forwarded.
James Arkle (1759-1823) was the minister of Hawick parish, Roxburghshire.
'I received a petition by post subscribed Jane Scott with an attestation by you which I have sent to the Sheriff Clerk with directions to cause it to be intimated to Gownlock [i.e. presumably Thomas Govinlock] the party complained of. It will however be necessary either that the petitioner herself or the Kirk Session on her behalf employ some writer to look after the cause as you are aware that a judge cannot conduct a lawsuit for either party & that the defender cannot be called into a court without having some one who shall be responsible for him for expences if he is brought there improperly.'
We have not identified this particular Jane Scott.
