SCOTT, Sir George Gilbert (1811-1878). Architect. Autograph Letter Signed to the Rev W H Joyce, 1 page 8vo (laid down), 20 Spring Gardens, 4 December 1858. Thanking him for congratulations 'on my appointment to the new Foreign Office'. The saga of Scott's appointment as architect for the new Foreign Office and associated buildings was a lengthy one, and caused him to have to compromise the gothic designs he had intended in favour of an italianate scheme. The designs were not finally approved until 1861, five years of the the competition for the job was held. [No: 20772]
