MAXWELL, Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1837-1915). Novelist.
Nine Autograph Letters Signed to Lady Anna Chandos Pole, mostly with envelopes, 19 pages 8vo, from Lichfield House, Richmond, and Kisseleffstrasse, one date stamp 1906.
A fine collection of letters written in a warm and lively style, mainly dealing with social business, with frequent references to 'Will', (her son William Babington Maxwell, also a novelist), and comments on books she has read.
'... I am writing ... to thank you most gratefully for the handsome "Blowity" with yr. valued inscription. It is far too good a book to read on the road ... .'
'I return the book with many thanks. ... Will & I have both skimmed the chapters, & I have been really amused. There is at least one mistake ... .'
'... Will is away but I can safely answer that he will be charmed to make you a member of the C.C. tho' really now, is it worth your while, the Tournament being over ... .'
'... I hope ... that you were safely housed before this storm began ... I am writing this by flashes of lightning.'
