ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Composer.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Ed Elgar') to Henry Clayton [of Novello & Co, Elgar's publishers], 1 page 4to, (slight folds and pin-holes), Hampstead, 30 October 1912. Discussing using [Julius] Buths as a translator, possibly for 'The Music Makers'.
'... if the translation is done why not Buths - he does not I think pretend to be a poet but in this case we want a musician first & we know he did the other things well. I shall be glad if you will send a copy to him anyway ...'
Julius Buths was the music director at Dusseldorf. He was so deeply impressed by 'The Dream of Gerontius' that not only did he accept the work for production at the Lower Rhine Festival but he also made the German translation of the text.
