STEPHENSON, Robert (1803-1859). Civil engineer.
Autograph Letter Signed to H. Graves of 6 Pall Mall, 1 page 4to (traces of mounting on the reverse), 34 Gloucester Square, no date [watermark 1854].
' I have desired my servant to allow any one one calling with your card to see my pictures.'
Robert Stephenson, who was unmarried, had moved to Gloucester Square in 1847. He employed a large staff, and had filled the rooms with paintings by Danby, Lucas and Landseer, as well as many scientific instruments and curiosities. He was, however, a lonely man in his later years, and preferred to linger in one or other of his clubs, the Athenæeum or the Carlton.
