STEPHENSON, Robert (1803-1859). Civil engineer. Autograph Letter Signed to H. Graves of 6 Pall Mall, 1 page 4to (traces of mounting on the reverse), 34 Gloucester Square, no date [watermark 1854]. ' I have desired my servant to allow any one one calling with your card to see my pictures.'Robert Stephenson, who was unmarried, had moved to Gloucester Square in 1847. He employed a large staff, and had filled the rooms with paintings by Danby, Lucas and Landseer, as well as many scientific instruments and curiosities. He was, however, a lonely man in his later years, and preferred to linger in one or other of his clubs, the Athenæeum or the Carlton. [No: 21276]
