JOWETT, Benjamin (1817-1893). Master of Balliol College, Oxford. Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 4 pages 8vo, Oxford, 6 July no year. Asking if the translations that Evelyn Abbott (1843-1901) is preparing can be incorporated into the new edition of Curtis's Greek Grammar. '... The reason why I am specially interested in the matter is as follows: Abbott is an excellent scholar who obtained University prizes & distinctions about 4 years ago. But immediately after taking his degree he was struck down by paralysis from which he has never recovered. As his mind was not affected he has gone on working & will very likely become distinguished as a philologist. ...'Jowett was correct in his analysis. Abbott subsequently became a noted tutor at Balliol and published a scholarly history of Greece. [No: 21456] The image shows the final page only.
