LISZT, Franz (1811-1886). Hungarian composer and pianist. Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 3 pages 8vo in purple ink, Bayreuth, 17 July 1882. With a full translation. A good letter relating to Sophie Menter (1846-1918, pianist and composer). The letter begins by explaining that in his official letter to the directorate of the [allgemeiner deutscher Music-Verein] Liszt had deliberately omited the name of Herr Commissionrat Kahn, to whom he now makes punning reference in German. '... The Zurich HÔtel Bain is not one of the cheapest ones. Sophie Menter paid out 700 Marks for seven nights there. Of course she asked for a salon to accommodate the Bechstein grand piano.Sophie Menter had been a pupil of Sigmund Lebert, one of the founders of the Stuttgart Conservatory, and was also taught by Liszt, who believed her to be a very promising player. From 1883 to 1886 Menter taught the piano at the Street Petersburg Conservatory. Although she was more famous as a performer, she was also a composer of piano music.
