RUSSELL, Lord John, 1st Earl (1792-1878). Prime Minister 1846-1852 and 1865-1866.
Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 1 page 4to, Rodborough, 29 December 1855. Explaining that he had been away but would be happy to fulfil an engagement in Gloucester.
'... If you have not yet made any other arrangement I can attend at Gloucester on the 10th or 11th of Jany. at the Examination, & Public Meeting.'
According to John Prest in Oxford DNB:
'Lord John was forced out of office, and resigned on 13 July 1855. He was on the verge of a breakdown, and bought Rodborough Manor near Amberley in Gloucestershire. He had only one engagement that autumn, when he addressed the YMCA on the causes which have retarded moral and political progress.'
