Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 2 pages 8vo (lightly hinged to a mount), St Andrews, 15 July 1840. Pointing his correspondent in the way of scientific knowledge.
'One of the best Mathematical Treatises on optics is Mr Coddingtons, and the best on a large scale is Sir John Herschels Treatise on Light in the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana. I do not know of any very popular treatises on optics excepting those published in the Library of Useful Knowledge and Dr Lardner's Cyclopaedia which were written by myself ...'
