STRAUS, Ludwig (1835-1899). Austrian-English violinist.
Autograph Letter Signed to [Mary] Carmichael, 2 pages 8vo, 166 Blomfield Terrace, Harrow Road, 3 May 1889. Discussing a concert to be held at Mrs Jackson's in Oxford, where he will play to the accompaniment of Miss Carmichael and suggests that they meet at the home of Mrs Henry Joachim to rehearse.
'... I had played in Oxford on Tuesday at the Musical Club a Mozart Sonata and she seemed inclined to have it or part of it at her party. We might do the Variations out of it. ...'
Straus identifies the piece in question [the second movement of the Sonata in F major, K.377] with a few opening bars of the theme.
Mary Carmichael was a prolific composer of art songs as well as an accompanist.
