CARRODUS, John Tiplady (1836-1895). Violinist. Autograph Letter Signed to [Mary] Carmichael, 2 facing pages 8vo, 199 Camden Road, 17 January 1895. Giving the history of his Guaneri as far as he knows it. '... In the appendix of a book by Davidson (now out of print) it ways "that the Violin is supposed to have been the one gambled away by Paganini". I have never proved this further. I have a certificate which I got with the Violin of Villaume of Paris which says it passed from his hands in 1833 sold to Eller whom he calls a celebrated Violinist. In 1872 it was returned to Villiaume [sic] & afterwards sold to Mr Rudolph Gleichauff by Mr Laurie of Glasgow. I bought it through Hill's ...'Mary Carmichael was a prolific composer of art songs as well as an accompanist. [No: 22334] The image shows the second page only.
