Incomplete Autograph Letter (last page(?s) with signature missing) to Mrs Robinson, 4 pages 8vo, Ambleside, 15 February 1869. Agonising over the preface to the second edition of her book which she wishes the Robinson's to critique, praising the review in the Pall Mall and reproving those who claim to be schoolfellows ('I never went to school').
'... I have seldom - scarcely ever - written any Preface to my books, because I think a book written with due clearness & finish ought not to need any introduction to the reader; & because it has always seemed to me at once an impertinence to others & a forfeiture of dignity - a tarnish on natural prudeur - to say anything of oneself ...'
