ROSSINI, Gioachino (1792-1868). Composer. Photograph signed and inscribed to Léo Delibes, overall 162 x 102 mm. (6½ x 4¼ inches), 10 February 1868. An original photograph, carte-de-visite size, mounted with a printed inscription commemorating the 500th performance of his opera, Guillaume Tell. A rather poignant relic. Guillaume Tell had been Rossini's last opera, first performed in 1829, after which he abandoned operatic composition and wrote virtually no music for the next forty years. The present photograph, showing the aged composer characteristically seated, almost full-length, dates from the last year of his life. [No: 23449]
