DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge (1832-1898). 'Lewis Carroll'.
Autograph Letter Signed ('C.L. Dodgson') to Mrs [Alice] Mallam, wife of James Thomas Mallam, 2 pages 8vo (oblong, slightly stained), Christ Church, Oxford, 19 March 1897. Making arrangements to meet her at Carfax in the centre of Oxford (close to Christ Church) [to escort her to his rooms for dinner], and sending his love to her daughter Ursula.
'Love & thanks to Ursula for her letter. I shall hope to get her another day.
I had
hoped to see you at Carfax at 6.15. If that is inconveniently early, do come at 6.30, if you can. I like a good restful interval, before dinner, for my guest to get settled down & feel at home. ...'
Dodgson had invited Mrs Mallam's daughter to tea the following day (Saturday) but she had been unable to come. He had recorded in his diary a month earlier that 'Ursula is a decided acquisition as a friend'.
