'I am settling my accounts with all things sublunary'

GODWIN, William (1756-1836). Novelist and philosopher.
Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent [perhaps Henry William Pickersgill], 1 page 8vo with address-leaf (mounting strip to the reverse), 44 Gower Place, 28 May 1831. Enquiring as to the status of the portrait which his correspondent had started the previous year.
'As I shall in no long time go out of the world, & am settling my accounts with all things sublunary, I should take it as a favour, if you would acquaint me with your present thoughts respecting my portrait beun by you nearly a year ago.'
The portrait painted by Pickersgill, oil on canvas, in 1830 is now on display at Dove Cottage in the care of the Wordsworth Trust.
Provenance: from a collection formed by A.M. Broadley in 1903.
