LISTER, Joseph (1827-1912). Surgeon. Founder of antiseptic surgery.
Engraved certificate confirming that William Weir had attended lecture by Lister and George Buchanan, on card, 114 x 78 mm. (4½ x 3 inches), 1862. Signed at the foot by both lecturers. The certificate is for attendance at the 'Clinical Lectures on the cases of Surgical Patients in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary'. The reverse has an engraving of the building.
 Lister had been appointed professor of surgery at Glasgow University in 1860, the same year that he was made a fellow of the Royal Society. It was not until 1867, however, that he published his papers inThe Lancet setting forth his system of antiseptic surgery.
