Autograph Letter Signed to Henry Hobhouse (1776-1854, at this time under-secretary of state for the home department), 3 pages 4to with address-leaf, Leamington, 27 August 1817. Pleading for clemencay for a young surgeon in the Navy, sentenced to seven years transportation for killing a fellow officer in a duel.
'... an offence which I may venture to say would have received in all probability a far less severe sentence in this country....'
