BRITTEN, Benjamin (1913-1976). Composer.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Ben') to 'My dear Eddy' [?Sackville-West], 2 pages small 4to, as from 4 Crabbe Street [Crag House], Aldeburgh, 4 October ?1947. Regretting that they had not been able to meet and dine, mentioning his visit to Scandinavia and a forthcoming venture to America.
'... We were all in Scandinavia, & didn't get back till just before the wedding. Now Peter & I are just off to U.S.A. for 2 months, so I probably shan't see you till about Christmas time. ... Scandinavia adored us, such a success as never, & so it was worth it, and we're all immensely heartened by it. Think of us occasionally in America. I dread it terribly. ...'
Crag House, in Crabbe Street, was Britten's home from 1947 to 1957, when he moved to the Red House, also in Aldeburgh. The present letter was presumably written during this period and could perhaps date from 1947.
