PEPYS, Samuel (1633-1703). Diarist.
Letter Signed ('S Pepys') to the officers at Chatham, ½-page folio, Navy Office 23 July 1668. Conveying the permission of the Duke of York to re-use the decking and planks of the wreck of the Royal Oak in a new ship as far as is practicable. A note in the margin adds 'takeing care to prevent wast'.
The letter is also signed by Sir John Mennes (1599-1671), William Penn, the father of the founder of Pennysylvania (ca 1621-1670) and Thomas Middleton (d. 1672)
In his entry for this day in the Diary Pepys complains that he had worked all day (having dinner at the office) until he was almost blind 'which mades my heart sad'.
