KITCHENER, Horatio Herbert (1850-1916). Army officer.
Two fine Autograph Letters Signed to Major-General Bayly, 4 pages 4to with envelopes, as Commander in Chief in India, Simla, 17 and 18 October 1908. With a long autograph corrected draft, in pencil, of Bayly's reply to the second letter, 4 pages folio.
The two letters are both in fine condition. The first offers Bayly the post of Inspector-General of Volunteers; the second argues at greater length about the various appointments in Kitchener's power, and takes issue at some length with Bayly about his present secretarial appointment.
'You say in your letter that the appointment of I.G. Vols is worse paid than a Brigade Command held by a major General. If I could arrange to offer you such a Brigade command in India would you accept it?
'I think with the exception of a divisional command for which your position in the list does not allow me in fairness to the general officers senior to you in the Indian army to recommend you at the present time, that I have done all I can for you; but if there is anything else at my disposal that you would like, I should be glad to know and I will do what I can to meet your wishes. ...'
