MILLAIS, Sir John Everett (1829-1896). Painter. Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 1½ pages 8vo on black-edged paper (note of identification on the back), 2 Palace Gate, Kensington, 19 April 1877. Probably written to the secretary of Lord Shaftesbury, requesting information on the size of the canvas and asking for a sitting when convenient. Millais's portrait of the philanthropist and politician Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Lord Shaftesbury, was completed in the year of this letter and is now in the possession of the British and Foreign Bible Society in London.
