MARIE LOUISE (1791-1847). Empress of the French. Second wife of Napoleon I.
Attractive Document Signed, 1 page large folio (oblong, slight soiling in the margins) on vellum with decorative border, Palais des Tuileries, 15 December 1811. Signed also by Cardinal Fesch, Napoleon's uncle, nominating the Baronne de Lacour as a 'Dame de la Société de la Charité maternelle'.
The Société de Charité maternelle was founded in 1788 to work alongside the government to provide welfare to the many needy of the time by encouraging maternal virtues amongst the poor. Such philanthropic organisations were encouraged as much to promote social interaction as to alleviate the call upon the public purse - a sort of big society.
