SABINE, Sir Edward (1788-1883). Army officer, explorer and physicist. Autograph Letter Signed to W[illiam] H[enry] Flower (1831-1899, zoologist), 2 pages 12mo, 13 Ashley Place, 20 April 1874. Resigning, on medical grounds, from the Philosophical and Royal Society clubs. '... I have been obliged to hear and to respect the opinion of my medical counsellor that I can no longer venture to attend the meetings of the Philosophical and of the Royal Society's Club: - where I have passed so many happy evenings in past years ...'Sabine had been elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1818 and was awarded the Copley medal in 1821. Having served for many years as secretary and president he resigned the latter position in 1871. The Royal Society Club and its associated organization, the Philosophical Club are dining clubs associated with Royal Society and confined to members of that body.
