SULLIVAN, Sir Arthur (1842-1900). Composer. Autograph Letter Signed to W[illiam] John Beale (1807-1883, founder of Beale & Co., solicitors), 2 pages 8vo, 17 Claverton Terrace, St George's Road, 19 September 1864. Accepting with pleasure an invitation to dinner 'especially as it will afford me an opportunity of again meeting some of my kind Birmingham friends'. Beale's firm of solicitors in both Birmingham and London were extremely successful, representing among others the Midland Bank which was founded by his older brother. His philanthropic efforts included supporting Birmingham's Triennial Music Festival. In 1873, Sullivan composed his oratorio The Light of the World, working on the libretto with the assistance of George Grove, as a result of a commission from the Festival.
