SCOTT, Robert Falcon (1868-1912). Antarctic explorer. Signature in ink 'Robt. F. Scott /"Discovery" Nov 17th. 1904.' on writing paper of Thornfield, Nr Bradford, Yorkshire, 1 page 8vo with blank leaf. The 'Discovery' expedition, Scott's first journey to Antartica, set sail on 6 August 1901, and is memorialised in his classic work The Voyage of the 'Discovery' (1905). Two relief expeditions were eventually sent to help to free his ship from the pack ice, which was finally achieved on 14 February 1904, the expedition concluding at Portsmouth on 10 September.
