MAZZINI, Giuseppe (1805-1872). Italian patriot.
Printed Document Signed, 1 page 8vo (oblong), 15 Radnor Street, Chelsea, 30 October 1853. Issued by the Italian National Party; a plea for funds to secure the release of political prisoners. Mazzini has written his address, added the day ('30'), and underlined 'to the slow death of the Italian dungeons'.

Another hand has written in the corner Alas! for the noble Poerio! etc'.ÿ

Carlo Poerio, together with other political prisoners, was incarcerated in appalling conditions in a labour camp on the island of Nisida. He had been given a sentence of nineteen years, and was not released until 1858, due in part to Gladstone's 1851 report on the inhumane conditions in Neapolitan prisons.
