CHATEAUBRIAND, François René de (1768-1848). French writer and statesman. Seven pages of the manuscript of his Essai sur la littérature anglaise, in a scribal hand heavily corrected thoughout by the author. 7 pages 4to, marked at the head in pencil with the corresponding pages of the printed text, from which this manuscript differs in numerous respects. Three pages correspond to the chapter entitled 'Effet de la critique', in which Chateaubriand contrasts the quality and disinterestedness of English literary criticism with the corrupt French equivalent, and four pages from a later part of the essay, devoted to Lord Byron. Provenance: Sotheby's 27 November 1986, lot 338. [No: 25862] The image links to a larger or more detailed version.
