KITCHENER, Horatio Herbert, 1st Earl (1850-1916). Field Marshal. Autograph Letter Signed ('Kitchener') to Lady Minto, 1 page 8vo with blank leaf, Wildflower Hall (on paper of the commander-in-chief in India), 'Sunday', no date. Sending her 'some answers to my letters' and adding that he hoped there would be more to come, and that 'we are being drowned out here', which could imply that Lady Minto was still in England at the time. Wildflower Hall, situated at Shimla in the Himalayas, is now a luxury hotel. Kitchener is presumably writing to Mary Caroline, wife of the Earl of Minto who became viceroy of India in succession to Lord Curzon in August 1905. Kitchener himself was commander-in-chief in India from 1902 to 1909. His signature to the present letter is therefore as a viscount; he did not receive his earldom until 1914. [No: 25899]
