'The Eliot dictatorship which is now at its zenith'

SASSOON, Siegfried (1886-1967). Poet and author.
Fine Autograph Letter Signed to [Herbert] Palmer, 1 page small 4to, Heytesbury House, Wiltshire, 12 January 1950. Thanking Palmer for his new book of poems and railing against the cult of T.S. Eliot.

'... Poetry should be written for the ear & the spoken word. Many of the modernists seem to have defective ears, and they evidently write for the eye in most cases. ...
'Naturally, one feels a bit sour about the Eliot dictatorship which is now at its zenith! ... He is 'our representative poet' - and people like you [and] me are practically forbidden to express ourselves in the way natural to us. ... there must be many ... who find him unrewarding and unabsorbable. ...'

Herbert Edward Palmer (1880-1961) was a prolific journalist and writer of novels and volumes of poetry.
