![]() GEORGE III (1738-1820). King of the United kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Document Signed (a shaky signature 'George R'), 1 page folio (oblong) on vellum with papered seal, given at St James's, 21 July 1808. Appointing William Monins to be an ensign in the 52nd or Oxfordshire regiment of foot commanded by Sir John Moore. Countersigned by Lord Hawkesbury. Sir John Moore (1761-1809) had been sent to Portugal in 1808 in a junior capacity, which he resented and against which he had complained in London. He sailed from Portsmouth towards the end of July. He was killed at Corunna on 16 January 1809. [No: 26184] The image links to a larger or more detailed version.
