COLBORNE, John, 1st baron Seaton (1778-1863). Army officer & colonial governor.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Seaton') to Colonel Wood, 2½ pages 8vo (evidence of former mounting on the reverse), 107 Eaton Square, 24 July 1854. Explaining the procedure for selecting a veterinary surgeon for the Life Guards, and promising to put Mr Cheney's name on the list.
'... I must ... be guided chiefly by the opinion of the Colonel commanding, and the testimonials of the candidates, in respect to his talent, experience and service. I have stated this to General Fawcett who has also recommended Mr Cheney.'
A note in red ink at the top in another hand states that Lord Seaton 'commanded the 51d at Waterloo and won the Battle'.
