Autograph sentiment written for an album, 'Robert Moffat, 75 years of age', 1 page 8vo, Liverpool, 16 September 1870.

'My album is the savage breast
Where darkness treads & tempests rest
Without one ray of light.
To write the name of Jesus there,
And point to worlds all bright & fair,
Is my supreme delight.'

Moffat had recently reluctantly retired to Britain with his wife Mary in 1870 because of their failing health. She died the following year, and Moffat then spent two and a half years without a permanent address travelling around Britain with his daughter, preaching and raising money for the missionary cause.
