NAPOLEON I (1769-1821). Emperor of the French.
Unpublished Letter Signed ('Np') to the Duc de Feltre, Minister of War, 1 page 4to, Paris, 18 January 1813. Giving orders for the selection of men and horses for the cavalry.
After defeat in the Russian campaign which devasted the Grand Army, Napoleon found it necessary both to recruit and reorganise his soldiers. He had special problems getting officers for the cavalry. Originally intended to be central pillar of the new army, by April 1813 the cavalry numbered only 15,000, compared to 226,000 men in the infantry and artillery.
Henri Jacques Clarke (1765-1818), Duc de Feltre, was Minister of War from 1807-1814. After the fall of Napoleon he remained loyal to Louis XVIII and was reappointed Minister of War and made Marshal of France.
