DOWNING, Sir George (1623?-1684). Soldier and politician. Downing Street is named after him. Document Signed, an exchequer receipt on a narrow vellum strip, 65 x 340 mm (ca 2½ x 13½ inches), dated 17 February 1665/6. Downing was a nephew of Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts, where the family had settled, and he became the second graduate of Harvard College. [No: 5753]
