OATES, Lawrence Edward Grace (1880-1912). Antarctic explorer. Sacrificed himself in a blizzard.
Autograph Letter Signed, in ink, ('L E G Oates') to his mother, 3 pages 8vo with envelope, Gestingthorpe Hall, Castle Hedingham, Essex, 19 November 1901. Written during a period of convalesence from a wound sustained in South Africa, Oates talks of hunting with his brother, Bryan, mentions a car accident, and declines to visit as 'these goodbye visits are always rather depressing'.
Hunting and steeplechasing occupied Oates during his leisure whilst serving with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons. His expertise with horses was one of the qualifications which determined Scott to include him in his ill-fated expedition to the Pole. During the expedition, he was put in charge of the ponies which were to haul the sledges, a job he performed conscientiously and expertly.
